Crusher fines page. The recommended base material for alpaca pens and paddocks is a fine crushed material. Washed sand, granite, river rock crusher fines is the best material available in this area to keep them up out of the dirt and mud. Squeegee and class 1 structural fill dirt can also be used. See those pages for more information. Then if you'd like, you can can put down an inch or two of wood shavings or wood chips on top of the base material. The only problems of using shavings in the barn, is that they can blow around and when the animals roll around in they, they can get working into their hair fiber.

For llama paddock and pen base, a non slip surface that drains well is recommended. The granite, river rock crusher fines and class 1 structural fill dirt are the best options. You would not want to use sand, squeegee, pea gravel or wood shavings or wood chips - ever. Don't use this in llama pens, barns or outdoor runs because the animals could slip and injure themselves. Also, they will work the materials into their coats. It becomes very difficult to get out of their coat and can even cause health problems. Call us at 720-298-0948 if you have any questions.

Measure the length and width of the area to be covered. If you don't have a tape measure, walk the length and width of the area. Figure each full step as 2 1/2 feet. Get the total square footage of the area by multiplying the length by the width.

Example: 30 feet long by 50 feet wide = 1500 square feet.
